Blount MLK Celebration Committee Chair Sharon Hannum has announced MLK Celebration Events planned for January 11-17, 2011.

"We have purposefully planned different types of events in hopes of getting more community involvement," said Ms. Hannum. Many events are free and open to the public. All Blount County residents are encouraged to participate.

Following is a summary:

Tuesday, January 11: Official kickoff at the Community Fellowship Dinner on Tuesday, January 11 at 6pm at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville. The community is invited, bring a dish to share.

Thursday, January 13: Community Forum - MLK and the Poor People’s Campaign, Revisited, 6pm – 8pm at Maryville College, Alumni Gym. Reception and refreshments at 5:30PM.

Friday, January 14: Business luncheon with keynote speaker former Knox Co. Mayor Mike Ragsdale, Airport Hilton at noon. The cost is $35 per person or $350 per table of 10. Reservations are required, call the Blount County Chamber of Commerce at 983-2241.

Friday, January 14: FREE movie night at the Palace Theater, 7PM featuring Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird." No reserved seating.

Saturday, January 15: The American Spirit Ensemble will perform at the Clayton Center for the Arts 8pm. Tickets start at $12 and can be purchased by calling 865-981-8590 or by visiting (link...).

Sunday, January 16: Community Worship service, Maryville First Baptist Church, 4pm, with The Reverend Ezra Maize from First AME Zion Church in Knoxville.

Monday, January 17: Parade, assembling at 12:30PM at the MLK Center in Alcoa proceeding to a 2PM program at the Clayton Center for the Arts with keynote speaker Rev. Gloria Wright. Parade Grand Marshall Bill Watts and will present Carr Clowney the Anthony Dunnings Community Service Award.
