The Maryville Daily Times reports this addition to the Blount County greenbelt as a missing link. The missing link here is intelligence.

The newspaper picture doesn't show it, but the "missing link" adds a trail path right next to a sidewalk.

This does not seem to be a great use of money, land, or facilities. There are other areas along the Blount County Greenway that have sidewalks as connectors. Just look at the other end of Springbrook Park at the Darwin Street/Vose Road and Farraday Street intersection. It is all sidewalks for quite some distance. In fact, you have to go through the Springbrook Pool parking lot to continue on the greenbelt.

I cannot imagine how the Maryville-Alcoa-Blount County Parks and Recreation Department thought this addition to the greenway was a good idea. It doesn't matter that the City of Alcoa and Blount County Parks and Rec only have to pay $2,480 of the approximately $8,000 cost. There are a lot of things more important that can be done with $2,480. We don't need more paving just for the heck of paving.

More pictures after the break...

If they wanted to connect the paths to avoid a quick turn at the park entrance, they could have added approx. 13 yards of sidewalk/greenbelt. Instead, they added 75 yards of greenbelt right next to a sidewalk. What is wrong with this picture?
