We went over to Springbrook Park for our summertime nightly walk. I commented to the Mrs., hey, there's no place to park, but there's nobody at the park? There must be a ballgame, she replied. Must be a big one, says me.
Little did we know that we were wading into the middle of one of the biggest high school sports rivalries in Tennessee.
We asked a couple of kids walking by, who's playing? Maryville and Alcoa, they said.
Oh, my! The 4A v. the 2A State Champs, hometown teams from our own county squaring off. We were somewhat embarrassed that we hadn't been keeping up and didn't know.
Anyway, it's an exciting night in Blount County. Probably bigger than Boomsday over there in Knoxville this weekend. Can't wait to read about the game in tomorrow's paper.
A few photos after the jump...

Every available space to park a car had a car parked in it. Say, is that Fred Thompson's Big Red Pickup?

Some never forget.

We're pretty sure almost everybody in Blount County was there.

I suppose we should have gone to the game. Having been in high school band, though, I still may have been to one too many high school football games.
Who won?
I live about three blocks from Maryville High School so it's been understandably quiet on our end.
The game was 20 mins. from kickoff when we were over there earlier tonight. I'm guessing it's still underway. Should be a good one.
Maryville just scored again to go up either 41 or 42 to 14 with very little time left. The broadcast online wasn't that great. I only tuned in a couple times.

Thanks for the update. Sounds about right. Bet it's a great game anyway, though.
I heard from a friend who went that the final score was 48-14 (I believe it was 48 at least...) Anyway, he said it was only 21-14 at halftime but Coach Quarles finally figured out how to stop the Alcoa QB from sneaking the ball. And some #88 dude on Maryville just took over the game on offense.
He said the crowd was very tame considering the rivalry. I still haven't been to a game yet. I can't imagine they'd be very competitive though if Maryville could just crush Alcoa like that.
42 - 14, according to the Maryville Daily Times.
I suspected I got the numerator wrong... Sorry about that. 42-14 is still a shellackin'.

You should be. If you want to be an integral part of this county, you should know what ten percent of it is doing.
