New Blount County Animal Shelter

Submitted by Terry on Fri, 01/04/2008 - 13:27.

Here is a artist rendering of the new Blount County Animal Center. As you can see, this will not be like the Maryville Shelter. And it is at the center of 12 acres. It has been placed on the land where it will hopefully cause the least noise nusiance to its neighbors.

This land was donated by the county for the shelter. It has been selected for its easy access as well as the large acreage. There are plans to later put in walking paths, dog parks, and other landscaping. We hope to see a center that will be a place to go. And hope it will be an approvement to the neighborhood.

Thanks, Terry...

For posting about the shelter and the groundbreaking ceremony. I hope many of you will join us!

I first heard about this land years ago from Howard Kerr, who had long served on the board of the Boys and Girls Club nearby and helped mow that area. He at one time thought it might be useful as a fairgrounds. In many ways this has been a forgotten piece of good land close in, so I was really pleased that the County Mayor and the Commission agreed to donate it for the shelter. Personally, I also hope that this might be a win-win for the Boys and Girls Club, since there should be opportunities for learning, service projects, etc.
