Blount Co. Institutions: Richy Kreme Donuts

We stopped by the local convenience store to get a Krispy Kreme donut and they were all out. Went to another nearby store that usually has them, and no luck there either.

I was starting to wonder where a fellow is supposed to get a donut around here, when the Mrs. suddenly remembered:

RICHY KREME!

We went over to Eagleton Village and were happy to find they were open. ("Monday through Saturday, 6AM to 6PM or sell out"). Their donuts are just as good if not better than Krispy Kremes, and they have an impressive variety (including half-price "ugly twist" cinnamon buns).

The lady in front of us wanted a creme filled but without chocolate. No problem. Donut master Carol Dixon made her one right up.

Because I took some photos, Ms. Dixon asked if we were traveling. We told her we lived around here but hadn't been to Richy Kreme in a hundred years. The couple behind us asked if we went to Eagleton School. We told them no, we grew up in South Knoxville but I used to work in Maryville. She said she used to sneak over from Eagleton School at lunchtime for Richy Kremes.

The store has been there since 1948, serving up fresh donuts for 60 years. It looks like they only update the window every ten years, meaning it's time to update it again.

Here's a brief history [1] of Richy Kreme, and their website [2] has more.
