Now that I'm done grimacing over Mayor Cunningham's choice of words in describing bloggers, I thought I'd take a moment to acknowledge the Daily Times' amazingly extensive coverage of the attack on their journalistic ethics and on the cultural bias of their star reporter/business editor, Mr. Laney (is he Latino?), at the Support Rally for Judge Young. (Link...)
I've been reading the DT off and on for a very long time and would never have believed you if you told me yesterday they would cover that, considering the content was as much about them as it was the good Judge. Noone can claim that the DT did a half-ass job on reporting that little party. One wonders if Mayor Cunningham anticipated that they would tape his whole spiel and post it on the web? Humorously, this included the Mayor's description of the furniture burned for heat by one of the parties in the "ongoing litigation," which he said they never would do. So, noone can claim the reporter got anything wrong, left anything out, or spun it due to his cultural biases this time. I am sure the Mayor, Mr. Overbey, Mr. Bennett, Mr. Finney, and Sheriff Berrong are thrilled with the excellence in reporting.
Kudos to Mark Boxley.
P.S. I came across this blogger's remarks in support of the DT also. It seems he has some history in Blount County: (Link...) If you find more, or just feel like throwing some love over toward the DT today, feel free to post on this thread.

Well, heck, I might just have to renew my Daily Times subscription!
Kudos to WATE, as well.
No, really. I am. These print editions will become collectors items. Great job Mark!
Mark did a great job, and for doing a hard job in the face of lawsuits, so did The Daily Times management. Going forward, maybe local bloggers can create a legal defense fund ad for the paper, and when one of the local sharks threatens, we can run it asking for funding. I know many would give their last dime to ensure the truth be told in Blount.
Local, I think your right. The fact none have come out today to dispute the reporting (or recording) shows The Daily Times is factual in their reporting.
I'm all for it - if they drop their current legal team. Looks like Goddard and Gamble aren't going to leave the mayor and their obviously going to support Young irregardless of what he says. Maybe time for the DT to look for council that is less invested in local politics.
I know many would give their last dime to ensure the truth be told in Blount.
Sounds a little hyperbolic.
I'm not exactly clear on why the Daily Times needs a legal defense fund. I'm guessing they have plenty of liability insurance, probably some litigation insurance or at least a fund in reserve, backing of the home office publishing company and their lawyers, etc. etc.
Maybe time for the DT to look for council that is less invested in local politics.
That sounds like a good idea, and probably a more realistic one.
For those that have lived here all their life - it's not hyperbole. What good is money if the good old boys intend to take it all so they can build monuments to themselves and power for themselves. This junk may be new to you - not to me.
If your only political memories were of what is currently being exposed - what would you sacrifice to see the truth is told?
I have been taught all of my life that "Truth" never changes, it is the same for everyone at all times. Revelant on the other hand it dependent on its environment and from perspective.
So, rambling being ended.......Should Governemnt be run from truth or revelance?
In the End, Governments are judged by the way they treat their poorest of the poor. It has been that way since the beginning of recorded History. Lots of successful models have polled citizens everytime before major decisions were made. Educating and leveling on the table with the populace would tend to lean toward truth over relevance.
I have to disagree, "truth" is a matter of perspective. A child raised on misprinted flash cards that tell him 2 + 2 = 5 is not "lying" when he gives five as an answer - but he's not right either.
Let's just say I advocate an accurate reporting (or recording) of the facts, so people can gain an honest perspective.
So if the Maryville-Alcoa Daily Times were a Tree-Hugging Left-Wing Socialist Liberal rag, why would it matter? I've had to stomach Faux News while waiting in Doctors' offices, so why can't opposing-viewpoint Iron-Eagle-Warhawk-Republikars stomach a little of the other side?
P.S. Do the Tree-Hugging Left-Wing Socialist Liberal's still be meeting at the Ryan's Strap-On-Feedbag next Friday Lunch, or do they be not?
