Mr. Garrett threatening lawsuits seems odd in that he questions in a public paper "the mother’s fanatical religious practices" (link...) . Does she claim she is a fanatic? I hope Mr. Sheppard intends on defending these outrageous remarks made toward his client.
For those who don't necessarily want the "corrected" version of the opposing lawyer Garrett, here is the transcript in question; (link...) Read it for yourself. Anybody else want their religion questioned this way in a court of law?
Maybe Mr. Garrett can chime in to tell us if he was one of the 40 endorsing Judge Young along with Duggan, Goddard, and Cunningham? (link...) (link...)
Croster, Aldridge, Trexler - are you ever going to stand up for your employees? Are you going to finish the FBI probe story? Will you tell Garrett to take his threats to Laney and stick em' where the sun don't shine? Ever think about being pro-active instead reactive?

judge young
first, of all, lawyers are supposed to say that about the other side. that's what they're paid for and craig is a good one. so is kevin sheppard. i know he represented his client well.
regarding Judge Young.
He is extremely courteous and kind to the litigants. In other words, he tells you to stfu in a nice way. I know, I have experienced it. He always rules for Blount Countians over non-blount countians. The voters absolutely love it. He favors local lawyers over non local lawyers. What county doesn't do that? Some lawyers seem to be more successful than others. Same as every other county. When its time for an election, he will be re-elected by a landslide. Sorry, charles, I like you a lot. just stating the facts.
but most importantly, he is one of a handful of east tennessee judges where a man actually has a shot at being treated fairly in custody cases. so, on your rush to depose Judge Young, don't throw out the baby with the bathwater-and this is coming from someone that's been on the losing end of judge young, so i would guess its pretty objective.
almost all judges in these divorce and custody cases know that time tends to take care of things. a judge is no substitute for two parents. people get tired of running to court every time they turn around and they realize that they just have to try to parent the best way they can given the circumstances of an uncooperative ex-spouse. the best thing parents can give children is not to argue around them or about them and to just give in and let it go. I know I have learned that. I pray my ex has also.
give the judge young bashing a rest.
I will be working hard to
I will be working hard to see Young is not re-elected. He should step aside quitely and take his racist and sexist ideas with him.
Re-read the transcript
This particular post wasn't about Judge Young, it's about one of his boys.
He is paid to write letters to the editor? Will he be billing Mr. Wright for that?
My God, do you hear yourself? Have you ever opened a civics book? Do you want honest government or one that plays favorites?
.
Don't count on it.
No, this does not happen in
No, this does not happen in any other area. Goodness! What a crazy thought! Have you lived any place else? I am guessing not.
Justice ain't justice if the deck is stacked to favor locals or men or people with pink hair or those who can afford the most expensive of the local lawyers or those who donate the most to a campaign.
Ya got me so PO'd that I have to quote Langsdon Hughes....
He always rules for Blount
He always rules for Blount Countians over non-blount countians.
I'm sure Joyce Bernard would agree that seems to be the local policy. Maybe he got this policy of looking after the good old boys from Judge Bevil? (link...) (link...)
Maybe the mayor can answer?
and while i'm on the
and while i'm on the subject, and after reading the letter, i have to agree with Mr. Garrett. Why in the world would the newspaper not even so much as mention that both children wanted to live with their father and both children so testified? Preference of any children over 12 years of age is given a lot of weight in the court system. WTF!!! Is it just because he ruled against a woman, God Forbid??
sounds like justice was done to me.

You've hit the nail on the head:
Since the Judge was going to give the kids the choice of which parent to live with and since they picked their dad, why on earth did he entertain (or even mandate through his own questioning) one hour of testimony about the mom's religion? It was certainly irrelevant, even if the mom had proven "fanatical." What difference could her faith possibly make if they weren't going to live with her?
I noticed that the paper didn't mention much about the kids, but assumed it was protecting their privacy out of respect for their juvenile status. The authors of the various letters to the editor bashing the newspaper, however, have done quite the opposite. Not even these kids GPAs escaped mention.
Rick Laney, biased? Surely not.
Once again, the biased Rick Laney was taken to the woodshed.
Rick Laney - not beholden
This is what you political machine sycophants don't get. The Daily Times bias goes back for as long as I can remember. But it really started in an overt way here (link...) You need to read this just to make sure your heroes really are your heroes.
Since then, nearly every county around Blount has had issues of corruption - but not here according to the Daily Times. Only recently have you heard anything other than what the party line feels it needs tell. The Mayor, Sheriff and the rest of the machine knew they could count on Stone and Irwin to write what they were told. This is neither journalism nor reporting - it's repeating. At it's best this is irresponsible, at worst it shows complacency.
Ever think you should be encouraging a free press to do more investigative journalism? Now because of competing outlets (including this one), it no longer is just about "The Truth According to Jerry". Seems you already support the Mayor, Sheriff and the machine - do you not like an alternative view point, away from the one they give you - just to make sure your support is warranted?
I respect faith, but doubt is what gets you an education.

Drumroll please................................................., No.
Anyone know if The Daily Times has legal council?
Council
I think the DT uses the same attorney as Mayor Cunningham, which is Rob Goddard of Goddard and Gamble. He was mentioned in another thread in here somewhere, but I can't find it. If anyone digs it up, please post a link.
*Update* - Duh, it was the leading post of this thread with a link to this article in the DT: (link...)
This all sounds to familiar....
I knew I had heard this story somewhere before.
Nice Stand
Mock statement from the ivory tower at the Daily Times:
After consulting with our legal team of Cunningham and Young flunkies (link...), we have decided to take the position of being scared shitless. Fight on boys, we the press will be back in the states stifling the truth where ever it rears its ugly head.
